A Lenten Meditation

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 1:6

God in his mercy and grace began the work of convicting, regenerating, reconciling, adopting, and saving you from his eternal wrath by enabling you to repent and believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. Without our pleading or prompting him, God sent his Son, Jesus to to live a perfect life of obedience for us, die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, and rise from the dead to guarantee our justification and victory over death and Satan. He did all this because of his electing love for us and for the praise of his glory!

Paul tells us in this passage that this same God of mercy, grace, and power who through the Holy Spirit began this good and glorious work of salvation and reconciliation with God in your life will definitely perfect you and keep you safe and secure till you meet Jesus or till Jesus returns to meet you. He who has saved you is now sanctifying you and he will help you to persevere to the very end. In the end he will glorify you with resurrection body, the beatific vision, and a crown of righteousness purchased by the blood of His Son.

Fear not friends because the Christ who is in us is our guaranteed hope of glory. We must continue to fix our eyes on Jesus as we look and lean on Jesus because he is the author, finisher, and perfecter of our faith. Nothing can snatch us out of his hands and nothing can separate us from his eternal love. We are safe in the everlasting arms of our sovereign and gracious Father.

“We are justified by faith alone, but not by a faith that is alone. True faith always yields the fruit of obedience to one degree or another.”
